Dussmann Italy buys majority stake in Steritalia
12/14/2011 – Multi-service provider acquires 70 percent shares in Italian surgical sterilization provider
On October the 10th Dussmann Service s.r.l took on ownership of 70 percent of shares in the Italian surgical sterilization provider, Steritalia SpA. The contract includes the option of acquiring the remaining 30 percent at the 2014 financial year end. Until then, these shares are owned by Tecnosanimed, a manufacturer of operation theater equip-ment.
Steritalia SpA, registered in Perugia, has an annual turnover of about five million Euros making it one of Italy’s leading surgical kits sterilization and integrated management providers. Its product portfolio extends through the entire process chain to supply med-ical facilities such as hospitals with sterile surgical instruments. This includes the daily collection of used surgical instrument sets, their cleaning and packing under clean-room conditions, the sterilization and subsequent delivery in 24 hours. Maintenance of surgical instruments such as sharpening of scalpels and real time exchange of spare parts is also possible. The entire process chain is subject to strict controls in terms of quality, quantity and performance of surgical instruments. Steritalia is certified to use the CE mark on surgical kits.
Pietro Auletta, President of Dussmann Italy, commented "With the acquisition of Steri-talia, we have also acquired additional know-how which will enable us to supply our numerous clients in the health care sector with sterile surgical instruments. This is a wide range of services that perfectly complements our existing hospital hygiene ser-vices and catering for patients and staff. We can now offer all of the non-medical ser-vices required by hospitals from one source“.
Dussmann Service, with activities in 21 countries, shares new innovations with all of the international subsidiaries. “Initially, we will be able to deploy this additional know-how in surgical sterilization operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland “ said Axel Gränitz, the Dussmann Group board member responsible for Dussmann Service Inter-national. “We are already the leading health care service provider in a number of coun-tries and these additional services will enable us to extend our range for this sector” he added.
Steritalia’s state-of-the-art sterilization systems have a current annual capacity of 100,000 surgical sets. Steritalia owns international process patents and exclusive rights to software which are important unique selling points on the market.
In Italy, around 4.7 million operations are carried out each year. “We have registered a strong tendency to contract surgical sterilization function to external service providers at both state and private medical institutions” said Auletta. The current proportion of services contracted is almost 50 million. “We estimate the market volume of surgical sterilization in Italy at around 700 million Euros” continued Auletta.
Steritalia’s present clients include many well-known hospitals such as the Ospedale San Giovanni in Roma and Ospedale Sant`Orsola Malpighi in Bologna.
