KulturKaufhaus

Where Shakespeare meets Auster. The English Bookshop on the ground floor

12/08/2010 – Have a look. Have a read. Take it home

Thousands of visitors celebrated the opening of the English Bookshop on St. Nicholas’ day. Even the British Ambassador came past to have a look around the new department at Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus. The Diplomat called attention to the huge range of around 50,000 books and that they illustrate “how multifaceted the literature of the English speaking world is”.

You can choose from a huge range of English language fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books that is second to none, displayed over 2 floors of the store in Friedrichstraße. There is also space for a whole range of subjects in English such gardening, cookery, travel and a wide selection of audio books.

Our English Bookshop is located on the ground floor, adjacent to the Sphinx. You can enter the bookshop directly through the side entrance on Mittelstraße to immerse yourself in Germany’s largest selection of English books. We are confident that you will be impressed by the exceptional atmosphere, our competent personnel and our extraordinary range of English language.

The unusual furnishings in our English Bookshop include accessories from the furniture collection by designer Ralph Lauren. A recurring theme integrated throughout the new department is Scottish tartan; the hand-made carpeting and the seating materials are eye-catching.

The interior architecture of the newest addition to the KulturKaufhaus was created by ROBERTNEUN, a Berlin architect which has attracted a great deal of positive attention with several projects such as the extension of Bar Tausend. The young team has won the Berlin Architecture Prize twice: in 2006 for the design of the Weekend Club in the Haus des Reisens on Alexanderplatz and in 2009 for a project carried out for the delicatessen chain Frische Paradies.

Following the opening of the English Bookshop, the total sales area at Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus is 7,300 square meters. The last extension was completed in January 2007 when the sales area of the sheet music department was extended from 55 square meters to over 230 square meters. Paperbacks and classical literature received an additional 200 square meters in August 2005. The most significant extension at the KulturKaufhaus took place in April 2004, when the third floor with an additional 1,000 square meters retail area was opened.
